Why is there a resurgence in smoking culture? Particularly among Gen Z?

To push our inquiry further, we must move beyond the "vibe" and interrogate the underlying structures of economy, biology, and urban philosophy that make the cigarette such a potent symbol today. ### 1. Georges Bataille and the "Accursed Share" **What if the primary appeal of the cigarette is not the nicotine, but the pure, ecstatic waste of money, health, and time?** The current analysis focuses on "sovereignty," but Georges Bataille’s concept of [The Accursed Share](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Accursed_Share) suggests a deeper drive: the human necessity for "non-productive expenditure." In a society obsessed with "investment"—whether in crypto, skincare, or networking—the cigarette is a rare act of "expenditure without return." It is a miniature potlatch, a sacrificial fire where one burns resources purely to assert existence beyond utility. > "The sun gives without ever receiving... the living organism, in a situation determined by the play of energy on the surface of the globe, ordinarily receives more energy than is necessary for maintaining life." — Georges Bataille, *The Accursed Share* ### 2. Pharmacopornographic Control **Vaping is a pharmaceutical upgrade for your productivity; smoking is a chemical insurrection against the "clean" body.** Philosopher Paul B. Preciado argues in [*Testo Junkie*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testo_Junkie) that we live in a "pharmacopornographic" era where our bodies are managed by "soft" technologies: pills, hormones, and digital streams that optimize us for capital. Vaping, with its clean pods and controlled dosages, fits perfectly into this regime. Investigating this would reveal how the "dirty" combustible cigarette acts as a bio-political glitch—a refusal to let the body be a transparent, optimized site of pharmaceutical management. ### 3. The Flâneur and the Smoke Screen **The cigarette is the last tool of the "flâneur," a physical veil used to observe the world while remaining strategically detached.** In [Walter Benjamin's](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/benjamin/) study of 19th-century Paris, the *flâneur* was an idle stroller who resisted the frantic pace of the industrial city. We can view the modern smoker as a "digital flâneur." The cloud of smoke creates a literal and figurative boundary in public space, allowing the individual to be "in" the city but not "of" it. This perspective would explore the cigarette as a piece of "mobile architecture" that grants the user a temporary, private atmosphere in an increasingly surveilled and crowded urban environment. ### 4. Junkspace and the Aesthetics of Ruin **Why does a generation raised in "IKEA-fied" sterile environments crave the yellowed teeth and stained fingers of the past?** Architect Rem Koolhaas coined the term "[Junkspace](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkspace)" to describe the sterile, air-conditioned, soul-less interiors of modern malls and airports. The cigarette is the ultimate "anti-junkspace" tool. It introduces smell, heat, and residue into environments designed to be odorless and timeless. This rabbit hole would investigate whether the smoking resurgence is a form of "interior design rebellion," where the "ruin" of the body is preferred over the "plasticity" of the modern world.
