Why does modern hollywood feel like it produces the same film over and over again?

While we’ve explored why Hollywood repeats itself and how some directors subvert that "blueprint," the mystery of why modern cinema feels the way it does goes even deeper. To truly understand the future of film, we need to look at the technology behind the screen, the disappearance of the "Movie Star," and the global competitors who are currently beating Hollywood at its own game. ## 1. The Death of the Movie Star: Is the IP the Real Actor? Why can you name twenty Marvel characters but struggle to name five new "A-list" movie stars under the age of thirty? In the past, people went to see a "Tom Cruise movie" or a "Julia Roberts movie" regardless of the plot. Today, the **Intellectual Property (IP)**—the brand—is the star. This shift has changed how stories are told; when the character (like Batman) is more important than the actor playing him, the actor becomes an interchangeable part in a machine. This rabbit hole explores how the loss of "star power" has forced studios to rely even more heavily on formulas. - **Source to explore:** *The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies* by [Ben Fritz](https://www.benfritz.com/). Fritz explains how Sony and Disney pivoted from betting on human charisma to betting on digital brands. ## 2. "The Volume" and the Flatness of Digital Light What if the "sameness" you feel isn't in the script, but in the very light hitting the camera? Many modern blockbusters are filmed inside **The Volume**, a massive semi-circular LED video wall that replaces traditional sets. While revolutionary, critics argue it creates a "visual sameness" where every environment—from a desert planet to a high-tech lab—shares the same flat, artificial glow. Investigating this technology reveals how the physical way we make movies might be "bottlenecking" visual creativity. - **Source to explore:** The cinematography of [Greig Fraser](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greig_Fraser), who pioneered this tech on *The Mandalorian* but warns about its limitations in making everything look "the same." ## 3. Mimetic Desire: Are We the Reason Movies are Repetitive? Are you actually bored of sequels, or is your brain biologically programmed to demand them? Using **Mimetic Theory**, philosopher [René Girard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9_Girard) argued that humans don’t know what they want; instead, we "imitate" the desires of others. If everyone is talking about the new *Star Wars*, we feel a biological urge to see it too, even if we claim to want "original" art. This perspective shifts the blame from "greedy studios" to the "feedback loop" of human psychology. - **Source to explore:** *Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World* by René Girard. It’s a challenging but transformative look at why human beings gravitate toward "the herd." ## 4. The "Hallyu" Lesson: How South Korea Saved the Mid-Budget Film Why did a movie about a poor family in a basement (*Parasite*) win Best Picture while Hollywood was playing it "safe" with sequels? While Hollywood abandoned the mid-budget drama, South Korean cinema embraced it, blending high-octane thrills with deep social commentary. By looking at the **Korean Wave (Hallyu)**, we can see a "parallel universe" where the "Blockbuster Blueprint" was rejected in favor of genre-bending original stories that now dominate global streaming charts. - **Source to explore:** [Bong Joon-ho’s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bong_Joon-ho) filmography. His work shows how to make "spectacle" movies that are also deeply weird, political, and unpredictable.
