Where does The Stranger by Albert Camus fit in the bigger system

Albert Camus' *The Stranger* is a seminal work in **existentialist** and **absurdist** philosophy. Here's how it fits into the broader context: 1. **Existentialism:** * **Core tenets:** Existentialism is a philosophical movement emphasizing individual existence, freedom, and responsibility. Key themes include the absence of inherent meaning in life and the necessity of creating one's own values. * **The Stranger's embodiment:** The protagonist, Meursault, exemplifies existentialist ideas through his detached perspective. He refuses to conform to societal expectations or ascribe meaning where he finds none. He makes choices based on his own experience. * **Influence:** Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir were other prominent existentialist thinkers. 2. **Absurdism:** * **Core tenets:** Absurdism explores the conflict between humanity's inherent desire for meaning and the universe's meaninglessness. This conflict leads to a sense of the absurd. * **The Stranger's portrayal of the absurd:** The novel demonstrates this through Meursault's encounters with a world that seems indifferent to human concerns. His indifference, and the chaos of events surrounding the murder, highlight the absurdity of existence. * **Camus's contributions:** Camus is considered a key figure in absurdist thought, with *The Myth of Sisyphus* providing a philosophical framework for understanding the absurd. 3. **Literary context:** * **Modernist literature:** *The Stranger* reflects modernist themes of alienation, alienation, and the fragmentation of experience. It challenges traditional narrative structures. * **Influences:** The novel draws inspiration from earlier works that explored similar themes, such as the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Franz Kafka. In summary, *The Stranger* uses narrative to explore central themes of both existentialism and absurdism. It does this while challenging traditional literary conventions.
