What are the key value decisions that most divide British voters this year ?

Did you know that in modern Britain, whether you have a university degree is now a more accurate predictor of your vote than how much money you have in the bank? For decades, British politics was a battle of the "pockets"—a struggle between the working class and the middle class over taxes and unions. Today, that has been replaced by a battle of the "passports," where the deepest divides are no longer about wealth, but about identity, belonging, and how we view the world. ## Anywheres vs. Somewheres The most significant value decision dividing the UK is the tension between what journalist David Goodhart calls the **"Anywheres"** and the **"Somewheres."** This framework, popularized in his book [*The Road to Somewhere*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_to_Somewhere), suggests that the country is split by its relationship to place. - **Anywheres:** Highly educated, mobile people who value autonomy and global integration. They view the world through "achieved identities" (their careers and degrees). - **Somewheres:** People deeply rooted in specific communities who value security, tradition, and "ascribed identities" (their family, faith, and local town). > "Anywheres prioritize freedom, mobility and novelty; Somewheres prioritize group identity, tradition and continuity." — David Goodhart ## The Net Zero Dilemma Voters are increasingly divided over the **cost of conscience**. While most Britons agree that climate change is a threat, they are split on who should pay to fix it. This is a value decision between **Environmental Stewardship** and **Economic Survival**. Voters in urban centers often support aggressive "Net Zero" targets, such as banning petrol cars or installing expensive heat pumps. However, in former industrial "Red Wall" towns, these policies are often seen as a luxury tax on the working class. This divide was famously highlighted during the [Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Uxbridge_and_South_Ruislip_by-election), where a local "clean air" driving charge (ULEZ) determined the outcome of a national political race. ## The Generational Social Contract Perhaps the most explosive divide is the value of **Fairness across Time**. The UK is currently grappling with a "Generational Chasm" regarding housing and state support. 1. **The Asset Owners:** Older voters often prioritize the "triple lock" on pensions and the protection of local green belts (preventing new housing). 2. **The Renters:** Younger voters, facing a [housing crisis](https://www.resolutionfoundation.org/publications/the-housing-gap/), value radical reform of planning laws and wealth redistribution. This isn't just about money; it's a moral question: Does a society owe more to those who have contributed to it for forty years, or to those who need to build a future within it? *** **Explore Further:** - How does the "Education Gap" in the UK compare to the "Diploma Divide" seen in the United States? - If identity is now more important than class, can political parties ever truly represent a "national" interest again? - To what extent does the divide between London and the "Rest of the UK" mirror the global tension between urban hubs and rural heartlands?

If you walk through a bustling street in London, you see a global marketplace: people from every corner of the world contributing to a high-speed economy. But if you visit a former mining town in South Yorkshire, you might see a community where the "unwritten rules" of life have been disrupted. This is where immigration hits the **Anywhere vs. Somewhere** divide most hardest—it isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the "social glue" that holds a country together. ## The Progressive Dilemma One of the most challenging insights into this divide comes from what David Goodhart calls the **Progressive Dilemma**. It suggests a fundamental tension between **Solidarity** (looking after one another through a welfare state) and **Diversity**. The argument is that a generous welfare state, like the NHS or the benefits system, relies on a high degree of mutual trust. We pay taxes to help people we don't know because we feel a "kinship" with them. - **Anywheres** view this kinship as universal. They believe we should extend our "circle of concern" to anyone who contributes to the economy, regardless of their origin. - **Somewheres** often feel that this "circle" is being stretched too thin. They worry that if a community becomes too diverse too quickly, the shared identity required to support high taxes and public spending might start to crumble. ## The "Bowling Alone" Effect To understand why this feels so personal for "Somewheres," we can look at the work of American sociologist [Robert Putnam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_D._Putnam). In his research on "Social Capital," Putnam found a surprising and uncomfortable trend: in the short term, high levels of ethnic diversity can cause people to "hunker down"—to withdraw from their communities and trust their neighbors less. > "The effect of diversity is worse than had been imagined. And it’s not just that we don’t trust people who are not like us. In diverse communities, we don’t trust people who look like us." — Robert Putnam, [E Pluribus Unum](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1467-9477.2007.00176.x) For a **Somewhere**, immigration isn't just a change in the shop signs on the high street; it is a perceived threat to the "social capital"—the networks of trust and reciprocity—that they rely on for security. ## Global Talent vs. Local Stability There is also a deep divide in how the two groups value **Human Capital**. 1. **Anywheres** see immigration through the lens of the "Global War for Talent." They view a doctor from India or a coder from Estonia as a "plug-and-play" asset that makes Britain richer. 2. **Somewheres** often view this as a "short-term fix" that ignores the need to train local people. They argue that relying on imported labor allows the government to neglect the education and "upskilling" of those already living in "left-behind" towns. In this light, the immigration debate isn't just about "who comes in," but about what a country owes to its own "Somewheres" versus its desire to compete in the "Anywhere" global economy.

If you look at a political map from 1950, the divide was simple: the "Left" represented the poor and the "Right" represented the rich. Today, that map has been scrambled. The **Anywhere vs. Somewhere** divide doesn't map perfectly onto "Left vs. Right"; instead, it creates a "political pincer" where both sides of the traditional spectrum are being pulled apart. ## The Rise of the "Brahmin Left" A common assumption is that Anywheres are naturally "Left-wing" because they value diversity and globalism. However, French economist [Thomas Piketty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Piketty) argues in his book [*Capital and Ideology*](https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674980822) that the Left has transformed from the party of the "worker" into the party of the "graduate." Piketty calls this the **Brahmin Left**. These are highly educated Anywheres who may vote for left-leaning parties but prioritize social issues—like climate change or identity politics—over the economic protectionism that manual laborers (Somewheres) used to demand. > "The left has become the party of the highly educated, while the right remains the party of the wealthy—but is increasingly becoming the party of those with less education who feel abandoned by the globalist transition." — Thomas Piketty ## The Libertarian Anywhere On the flip side, being "Right-wing" doesn't automatically make you a Somewhere. There is a powerful group of **Right-wing Anywheres**—often called "Libertarians" or "Free Marketeers." These individuals, like many in Silicon Valley or the City of London, believe in "Right-wing" economics (low taxes, deregulation) but are "Anywhere" in their culture. They view national borders as inefficient barriers to trade. To a Libertarian Anywhere, a Somewhere’s desire to protect local culture looks like "protectionism" that slows down the global economy. ## The Horseshoe of Discontent This creates a strange "horseshoe" effect where the "Far Left" and the "Far Right" often agree more with each other than with the "Anywhere" center. 1. **The Somewhere Left:** Traditional trade unionists who want to limit immigration to protect wages and strengthen the local community. 2. **The Somewhere Right:** Cultural conservatives who want to limit immigration to protect national identity and tradition. Both groups are "Somewhere," yet one identifies as Left and the other as Right. They are united by a desire for **stability and place**, standing in opposition to the **mobility and meritocracy** championed by Anywheres of all political stripes. ## The Education Gap The most accurate predictor of whether someone is an Anywhere or a Somewhere today isn't their bank balance; it’s their **educational credentials**. In the 2016 Brexit referendum and US elections, the "Left-Right" divide was overshadowed by the "Degree-Non-Degree" divide. Universities act as "Anywhere factories," teaching students to value portable skills and universal values. Meanwhile, those who do not attend university often remain in their home regions, reinforcing "Somewhere" values that prioritize local loyalty over global fluidity.
