The key take-away for me as the author of this grid is: By applying a conditional pardon only to the sentence, the state preserves the historical truth of a verdict, but retrospectively withdraws the state's approval of the convicted person's execution. But I'm troubled by the implications for this and applying contemporary values to historical cases. But i welcome contributions fro others. ML
