Italian unification

While the historical strategy of **trasformismo** explains the political survival of the Sicilian elite, the character of Prince Salina—the central figure of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s *The Leopard*—provides a template for the psychological and cultural mechanisms that enabled this transition. The "Salina impact" refers to a specific form of intellectualized passivity and the strategic merging of social classes that defined the post-unification era. ## The Psychological Framework of "Sicilitudine" Don Fabrizio, the Prince of Salina, embodies a concept often described as **Sicilitudine**—a profound sense of islander identity characterized by a resistance to external "improvement." His impact on the transition was not merely through political maneuvering, but through a philosophical rejection of the new state's productivity-focused ethos. 1. **The Astronomical Metaphor:** As an amateur astronomer, Salina views the political upheavals of the Risorgimento through a lens of cosmic indifference. This perspective suggests that all political changes are transitory and ultimately insignificant compared to the fixed laws of nature. This mindset allowed the Sicilian elite to detach themselves emotionally from the loss of sovereign power while maintaining their local prestige. 2. **The Desire for "Sleep":** Salina’s famous refusal to participate in the new Italian Senate—communicated to the Piedmontese envoy Chevalley—highlights a core tenet of the aristocratic impact: the belief that Sicilians do not want to "improve," but only to "sleep." This refusal to engage with the modernizing machinery of the state ensured that the new administration remained an alien, external force rather than an integrated domestic one. ## The Biological Alliance: Marriage as Capital Transfer Beyond political survival, the Salina archetype facilitated a critical economic evolution: the fusion of **landed prestige** with **bourgeois liquidity**. The Foundation notes the preservation of social order, but the specific mechanism was the strategic marriage alliance. - **The Tancredi-Angelica Union:** The marriage between the Prince’s impoverished but noble nephew, Tancredi, and Angelica, the daughter of the wealthy but "vulgar" mayor Calogero Sedàra, represents the vital transfusion of capital. This union saved the aristocracy from bankruptcy by trading historical legitimacy for the cash reserves of the rising middle class. - **The Monetarization of Status:** Through this alliance, the Salina archetype transformed the nature of power in Sicily. Wealth was no longer solely tied to the feudal production of the **latifondo** (large estate), but became increasingly mobile and integrated into the broader capitalist networks of the Italian mainland. ## The Refusal of Reform as a Cultural Shield The impact of the Salina figure is most visible in the failure of the Piedmontese "civilizing mission." When offered the chance to help shape the new Kingdom’s laws, the Prince’s refusal serves as a symbolic blockade. - **Strategic Non-Cooperation:** By declining formal roles in the new government, the high aristocracy delegitimized the Italian state in the eyes of the local population. They remained "monarchs in their own homes," creating a dual-power structure where the official law of the state was constantly undermined by the traditional authority of the local patron. - **Cultural Fossilization:** This refusal contributed to the "voluptuousness of death" that Salina identifies in his culture—a preference for the preservation of the past over the uncertainties of the future. This helped ensure that the industrial and agricultural revolutions occurring in the North would find no intellectual or social purchase in the Sicilian interior.
