give me an in depth analysis on the olympics and why Alysa Liu is celebrated while Eileen Gu hated in America

Imagine standing on an Olympic podium, draped in a flag, while millions of people in your home country debate whether you are a hero or a traitor. This was the reality for two teenage stars during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. While the Olympics are marketed as a celebration of global unity, they often serve as a high-stakes arena for **Nationalism**—the belief that one's primary loyalty belongs to their nation-state. ## The Narrative of Choice The contrasting reception of [Alysa Liu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alysa_Liu) and [Eileen Gu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eileen_Gu) in America isn't just about sports; it is about the "American Dream" and the current geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China. 1. **Alysa Liu: The Refugee’s Daughter** Alysa Liu’s story is a classic American narrative. Her father, Arthur Liu, was a political refugee who fled China after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. By competing for Team USA, Alysa symbolized the success of the American system—a child of an immigrant achieving greatness through the freedoms provided by her adopted home. To many Americans, she represented a "thank you" to the nation. 2. **Eileen Gu: The "Defector"** Eileen Gu, born and raised in San Francisco and trained by American coaches, chose to represent China. While this is legally permitted under Olympic rules, it triggered deep-seated anxieties about American decline. Critics viewed her move not as a personal cultural choice, but as an act of opportunism. They argued she used American resources to benefit a strategic rival, all while securing lucrative Chinese sponsorship deals. ## Soft Power and Identity Political scientist Joseph Nye coined the term **Soft Power** to describe a country's ability to influence others through culture and values rather than military force. > "Soft power is the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than coercion or payments. It arises from the attractiveness of a country's culture, political ideals, and policies." > — Joseph Nye, [Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics](https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt4cg96m) In this framework, Eileen Gu was seen as a massive "Soft Power" win for China. By choosing China, she implicitly suggested that the future—and the better brand deals—lay in the East. For many Americans, this felt like a rejection of American exceptionalism. Conversely, she faced intense scrutiny regarding her citizenship status, as China generally does not recognize dual nationality, leading to accusations of receiving "special treatment." ## The Commercial vs. The Political The "hatred" directed at Gu also stemmed from a perceived lack of transparency. While Liu was open about her family’s history and politics, Gu often dodged political questions, famously stating, "When I’m in China, I’m Chinese. When I’m in the US, I’m American." In a polarized era, many American spectators viewed this neutrality as a calculated business move to protect her earnings in the Chinese market, whereas Liu’s loyalty to the U.S. flag was seen as "authentic" and non-transactional. *** **Explore Further:** - **The History of Olympic Defections:** How did "athletic citizenship" work during the Cold War compared to today's globalized economy? - **The Economics of Amateurism:** If American athletes aren't paid by their government (unlike in China), do they "owe" their loyalty to the U.S. Olympic Committee? - **Corporate Nationality:** How do multinational brands like Nike or Red Bull influence which flag an athlete chooses to fly?

While the political storm swirled around them, Alysa Liu and Eileen Gu were busy battling the laws of physics. One was navigating the razor-thin edges of a skating blade, while the other was attempting to survive 1620-degree rotations in mid-air. Their final rankings tell a story of two very different kinds of athletic peaks: one based on historical dominance and the other on personal redemption. ## Alysa Liu: Finding Joy in the "Ice Box" Alysa Liu competed in **Women’s Single Figure Skating**. She finished in **7th place** at the 2022 Beijing Games. While 7th place might not sound like a triumph to a casual observer, Liu’s performance was a "moral victory" for a sport in crisis. The 2022 women’s event was overshadowed by the [Kamila Valieva doping scandal](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/17/sports/olympics/kamila-valieva-figure-skating-recap.html), which highlighted the intense, often toxic pressure on teenage skaters. Liu had been a child prodigy, winning her first U.S. Championship at just 13. However, by the time she reached Beijing, she had navigated a growth spurt, multiple coaching changes, and a mid-season bout with COVID-19. Her 7th-place finish was celebrated because she skated with visible, infectious happiness—a sharp contrast to the tears and chaos of the medalists. > "I'm just so happy... I really just wanted to have a good time and I did." > — Alysa Liu, [post-competition interview](https://www.nbcsports.com/olympics/news/alysa-liu-retires-figure-skating) ## Eileen Gu: The Hat-Trick on the Slopes Eileen Gu competed in **Freestyle Skiing**, specifically in three disciplines: **Big Air**, **Slopestyle**, and **Halfpipe**. She achieved a historic "triple," becoming the first action-sports athlete to win three medals in a single Winter Olympics: 1. **Gold Medal:** Big Air 2. **Gold Medal:** Halfpipe 3. **Silver Medal:** Slopestyle Gu’s performance was a masterclass in high-risk "clutch" performance. In the Big Air final, she landed a **"left double cork 1620"**—four and a half rotations in the air—a trick she had never successfully performed in a competition before that moment. ## The Technical vs. The Subjective The difference in their results also highlights the varying "mechanisms" of their sports: - **The Physics of Risk:** Gu’s sport, Freestyle Skiing, is increasingly driven by "progressive" difficulty. To win, she had to push the boundaries of what was physically possible (the 1620 rotation). Her dominance was objective; she flew higher and spun more than anyone else. - **The Aesthetic Grind:** Figure skating is a blend of extreme athleticism and subjective artistry. Liu, once a "quad jumper" (performing four rotations), focused more on her skating skills and emotional expression in Beijing. Her 7th-place finish reflected a shift from being a "jumping machine" to a holistic performer. In the end, Gu left Beijing as the undisputed face of the Games with three medals, while Liu left as a symbol of resilience, retiring shortly after at the age of 16 to pursue a "normal" life as a college student at [UCLA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alysa_Liu).
