The World as a Mystery We Invent
Imagine that the universe does not actually contain "chairs," "trees," or "atoms." Instead, the universe is a vast, swirling ocean of potential, and we are the ones who drop nets into that ocean to pull out specific shapes. ## The Infinite Openness of the World
In his landmark work [Closure: A New Theory of Knowledge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilary_Lawson), Lawson proposes that the world is fundamentally **open**. By "openness," he doesn't mean the world is empty; rather, it is so overflowing with complexity and detail that it has no inherent structure of its own. It is a "pre-conceptual" reality.
Most of us assume that the world comes pre-packaged into objects—that a rock is a rock regardless of whether we are there to see it. Lawson argues the opposite. He suggests that the world provides the raw material, but it does not tell us how to divide it up.
## Human Closure: Creating Order from Chaos
If the world is an infinite, unstructured mess, how do we survive? Lawson argues that humans perform an act called **closure**.
Closure is the process by which we take the "openness" of the world and fix it into something stable and understandable. We draw boundaries where none exist. When you look at a forest and see individual trees, you are performing closure. You are ignoring the infinite connections between the soil, the fungi, the air, and the cells to create a manageable "thing" called a tree.

Language, science, and even our daily perceptions are all forms of closure. We "close" the world to make it useful. However, because the world is infinitely open, no closure is ever "the" final truth. Every time we define something, we leave out an infinite amount of other possibilities.
## Non-Realist Metaphysics
This leads to Lawson’s **non-realist metaphysics**. Metaphysics is the study of the nature of reality. A "realist" believes there is one true way the world is, and our job is to discover it. A "non-realist" like Lawson argues that "truth" is not a map of a fixed world. Instead, truth is simply a closure that works for us in a specific context.
In this view, science isn't discovering the "laws of nature" hidden in the universe; it is developing incredibly sophisticated "closures" that allow us to predict and manipulate the world. The world is not a puzzle to be solved, but an endless mystery that we are constantly reimagining.
